When Soldiers at Nuneaton 's Gamecock Barracks threw open their gates to the public, the roar of Rolls-Royce Merlin engines and motorbikes set the scene for a fantastic day out and Nuneaton Based Air Cadets were determined to enjoy every moment of the action packed event.

On Sunday 3rd July the Soldiers of 30th Signal Regiment and 258 Signal Squadron based at Gamecock Barracks, Bramcote, opened the doors and invited the public to join them for a day packed with excitement. With loads of attractions, there was something for everyone! The event, which is held annually, aims to raise as much money as possible for charity. In previous years support from the local community has been amazing and tens of thousands of pounds have been raised for worthwhile causes including the Mayors Appeal and a number of deserving military charities.

The highlight of the day for the Air Cadets from 121 ( Nuneaton ) Squadron came with the arrival of a Spitfire and Hurricane from the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The unforgettable sound of their Rolls-Royce Merlin engines filled the air as they swooped low over the former wartime airfield originally known as RAF Bramcote.

When the Spitfire and Hurricane flew of into the sun, things didn't get any quieter as the roar from the motorbikes of the Freestyle Moto-X team signalled the start of the next display. The cadets were thrilled by the antics of the riders, jumping 40 feet in the air pulling acrobatic stunts over gaps approaching 100 feet. Not to be outdone by the daring tricks of the Freestyle Motto-X team it was then time for the younger generation of motorcyclists, the Imps, the world's foremost youth motorcycle display team to thrill the 30,000 capacity crowd with their spectacular display.

With all this excitement the cadets still managed to find time to talk to the prospective recruits and members of the public who visited the Air Cadet display. They also had a very special visit from Marcus Jones, Member of Parliament for Nuneaton who said, “I really enjoyed meeting the cadets, they are a great bunch of youngsters. It was fantastic to see 121 squadron representing Nuneaton at the Bramcote Barracks Open Day, I may be bias, but 121 were amongst the best dressed and turned out people at the event – they were a credit to Nuneaton ”.
