On the 15 th September 121 ( Nuneaton ) Squadron turned back the clock to the summer of 1940 for a Blitz Ball which marked the anniversary of one of the finest moments of British military History, 'The Battle of Britain'.
The Bedworth Civic Hall near Nuneaton was decked out in genuine wartime style with banners and bunting and there was plenty of space for everyone to dance the night away and socialise.
The Meridians Dance Band provided the 1940's big band sounds including Glenn Miller and many other wartime classics. Original sound effects and speech recordings from the war years and a genuine air-raid siren together with search lights helped to set the mood.
The ball was attended by 100 or so guests many of whom had really entered into the spirit of things by turning up in 1940's costume. Accomplished dancers from several local dance schools led the way on the dance floor but it didn't take long before the other guests joined in, even those with two left feet.
Flight Lieutenant Ian Crewe Officer Commanding 121 ( Nuneaton ) Squadron said, "We all had an absolutely fantastic evening. It was a wonderful opportunity for young and old alike to step back into the past and bring their friends and family out for an evening filled with traditional music, dance and memories. We've already had some of the dance schools and many other people asking if we're going to organise another Blitz Ball for next year. If we can get the support from the local dancing community again then we may very well consider holding another Blitz Ball in 2007".
