A member of the Royal Air Force Fire Service from Leamington Spa has just returned, having been stationed at an Army base vital to tackling terrorism. Senior Aircraftsman Simon Watson
had been working at Camp Bastion, which was built to increase stability in the troubled Hellmand Province of Afghanistan.
Simon, 26 is also a Service Instructor at 1368 Warwick & Leamington Squadron Air Cadets were he teaches general RAF subjects to the cadets.
Simon assisted in the operations of a tactical landing zone for multi national aircraft, by providing a Fire & Rescue Service and RAF asset force protection. He was one of over 3,000 troops at Camp Bastion, which is the largest British Army base built since the World War II. He is quoted as saying “It’s great to be back
in the UK and looking forward to getting back to normality, 4 months in the dessert does take its toll on you but you also do feel a sense of achievement knowing you’ve done your part in bringing back some stabilization in the country”.
Simon’s dedication to his role in helping to teach at his local ATC Squadron shows how strong the link between the Corp and the RAF is. Simon is one of many RAF and Ex RAF members who voluntary give up their time to help support their local Squadrons.
