On a bitterly cold Saturday evening, the cadets from 165 (Castle Bromwich) Squadron of the Air Training Corps held their Annual Presentation Evening with Squadron Leader Martin Harrison, Deputy Wing Commander as one of the Guest's of Honour. He was joined in this role by Councillor Ann Holtom whose area covers the Castle Vale estate, home of 165 (Castle Bromwich) Squadron.
The event took place in St Cuthbert's Church and after a blessing given by Father Roger Sheppard, the Squadron's Chaplain, Flight Lieutenant James Martin, the Squadrons Commanding Officer gave a short speech outlining the activities that the Cadet's had been involved in throughout the previous year.
A total of 32 Cadet's were 'presented' to Councillor Holtom, in front of their families and friends, to receive Certificates and praise for their own achievements throughout 2008.
This was followed by the presentations of Certificates to the third place and runner-up's and the Trophies themselves to the Winners of the 8 Shields and Plaques that are highly prized by and eagerly fought for by the Cadet's. These presentations were made by Squadron Leader Harrison.
Flight Lieutenant Martin then made three surprise presentations to Mrs Joyce Curtis for her long service to the Squadron's Civilian Committee, now over ten years; Mrs Frances Nicholas of the Firs Branch Royal British Legion who has been the Poppy Appeal contact for 165 Squadron for 35 years and finally the Dave Lemm Award for Outstanding Achievement was presented to Warrant Officer Gerry Elston of 165 Squadron for his long and dedicated service with the Squadron, now over 40 years.
The evening was very well supported by the Cadet's families and friends along with past members of the Squadron as well as many current friends too. In total about 160 people braved the elements to witness all of the presentations being made by the two Guest's.
Councillor Holtom and Squadron Leader Harrison then each made a short speech, both extolling the virtues of the young people within the ATC in general and of 165 Squadron in particular as well as the dedicated staff and committee members who make all of this possible. Squadron Leader John Phillips, Honorary President of 165 Squadron also made a brief speech to the audience thanking the families of the cadets for their support and also congratulating the cadets for their amazing achievements. He also paid tribute to the wonderful efforts of all of the volunteer staff. |
