Presentation Evening celebrates an outstanding year
of success for 194 (BSA) Squadron

The Lord and Lady Mayoress of Birmingham were Guests of Honour at the second Annual Presentation Evening of 194(BSA) Squadron, held at the TA Centre in Sparkbrook, Birmingham, where 30 of the Squadron's 38 cadets received certificates, awards and trophies.

Also present were Mr and Mrs David Gooding, and Sir Stephen and Lady Brown, of the Royal British Legion, Wing Commander P Ladwa (OC Wing) and Squadron Leader Bryan Coats  (Wing Adventure Training and D of E Award Officer).

The first highlight related to the Female cadets, who, after just two years of a female presence in the Squadron, made an almost clean sweep of the awards for Cadet and Recruit of the Year, with 5 out of the 7 placings going to the girls. The Cadet of the Year trophy was won by Sgt (f) Seetal Rupra, 194's first female cadet, who gained distinctions in her exams and her Cosford JNCO course. She has also been selected as the only cadet from the Wing to attend the RAFA-sponsored camp in Cyprus this April. Her younger sister Cadet Simran Rupra was the Recruit of the Year.

The second major highlight was the Squadron's DoE Award achievements. The 15 awards comprised 5 Golds, 5 Silvers, and 5 Bronzes. The Golds were the first in the Squadron for many years, and the total exceeded 2008's record of 9 Bronzes. Sqn Ldr Coats indicated that the Squadron is in line for 2nd place in the Wing league of DoE Awards for 2009/10.

Cadets also gained 5 BTEC awards during the year.

The third highlight related to the Squadron's new affiliation to the Royal British Legion. Mr Dave Gooding, County Chairman, presented a Certificate of Affiliation, and warmly thanked the Squadron for its Poppy Appeal support last year, its first for many years.

The CO also presented Commendation Certificates to two members of the RAF Motivational Outreach Team, who would shortly be moving to other RAF posts. Sgt Shiv Chand and Cpl Raj Chawlia had provided excellent support to the Squadron and its cadets.

The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress complimented the cadets on their achievements and emphasised the advantages of being Air Cadets.  The Lady Mayoress also contrasted the girls' success with her own (unsuccessful) attempts as a young girl to find an outlet for her adventurous ambitions and said that the girls success this year was a challenge for the lads in 2010!  Sir Stephen Brown, a former President of the Family Division of the High Court of Justice, and Wing Commander Ladwa, both complimented the cadets and staff and particularly thanked the families for supporting their sons and daughters.

After the presentations, everyone enjoyed the excellent informal buffet, during which the guests circulated amongst the cadets and their families.
