Two cadets from 198 ( Hinckley ) Squadron, Air Training Corps, recently completed and successfully passed a Gliding Scholarship Course at RAF Syerston in Nottinghamshire.
Prior to qualifying as Glider pilots, the cadets attended a day's flight simulator course at RAF Wyton, Cambridgeshire, in order to familiarize them with the controls of the aircraft, before attending a full weeks course, accommodated at RAF Cranwell, Lincolnshire, travelling each day to the gliding school at RAF Syerston.
Cadet Corporal Emma Hibbitt, 16, from Narborough, and Cadet Jack Leman, 17, from Earl Shilton, both successfully completed the week long intensive gliding course, which concluded in a solo flight in an RAF Viking Glider aircraft. They were both awarded their Silver Solo Gliding Wings.
In order to achieve Silver Solo standard, both cadets were taught aircraft control, air navigation, emergency procedures, airmanship and aircraft safety, and once they satisfied their instructor were granted a solo circuit in the glider.
