Cadets meet the Son of Sir Frank Wittle at the British Festival

On Sunday 27 th May 2007 Cadets and Staff from 2028 Southam Squadron participated in the British Festival, held at the Motor Heritage Centre at Gaydon in Warwickshire. The Festival is a national event arranged by the Heritage Centre which involves not only Vintage Cars, Countryside activities and other Exhibits but also this year recognition of the Centenary of the birth of Sir Frank Whittle the inventor of the Jet Engine. 2028 Squadron was lucky enough to have been involved in last year's event, so to be there again this year demonstrates the Museum's commitment to the community.

Cadets and Staff manned a 'recruiting stand' throughout the day. This year's programme also involved a Jousting Show, a Birds of Prey Display, Carriage Driving and even Ferret Racing! There was also an opportunity for everyone to take time out during the day to visit the Museum which has been given a brand new look for 2007.

The weather turned out to be less than perfect and although this year the Recruiting Stand was given a far better place adjacent to the main Museum, the Staff and Cadets had to contend with driving rain and wind throughout the day. The weather also reduced the numbers of members of the public who attended the event.

However, the highlight of the day for the Staff and Cadets was an opportunity to spend time with Mr Ian Whittle, the son of Sir Frank Whittle who had driven up from his home to be at the Festival. It was a great honour to speak to him and he in turn showed a great interest in the Cadets, enquiring about their future prospects and their time in the Air Training Corps. He was also delighted to say how important the Air Cadets are to the Royal Air Force and was impressed by two of the Cadets expressing their interest in Aviation Engineering.

The photos show the newly refurbished Wing Recruiting Trailer which we used as the 'recruiting stand' and the Staff and Cadets with Mr Ian Whittle.

Flight Lieutenant Moreton said after the Event, "When we were invited to take part in last years Festival, we were delighted but to be back here again this year is an honour and really demonstrates the commitment of the Heritage Centre to show a diverse range of activities available to both young and old. It was a pity the weather ruined the day but everyone agreed that meeting the son of Sir Frank Whittle more than made up for it."
