Cadets Recruit at Southam Carnival

On Bank Holiday Monday the 26th May 2008 members of Staff and Cadets from 2028 Southam Squadron took part in Southam Carnival. Using the Wing gazebo and other equipment they put up a Recruiting ‘stand.' Unfortunately the day was cold and quite wet for most of the time but a considerable number of local people turned out for the Carnival which is organised every year by the local Branch of the Lions.

The Adjutant, Pilot Officer Hicks, Sergeant Caine, the Squadron Training and Radio Officer and the CO, Flight Lieutenant Moreton set up and prepared the Recruiting ‘stand' on the nearby recreation ground, together with many representatives of other local organisations from Southam. This year, together with hand outs and other recruiting literature about the ATC, Sergeant Caine brought along radio equipment which attracted a lot of interest. The recently acquired Wing gazebo really made a difference and demonstrated a totally professional appearance to recruiting for the ATC which a number of people remarked about.

During the afternoon, everyone got into the spirit of the day and despite the poor weather, a number of young people approached the Stand and expressed an interest in joining the Air Cadets. The Cadets were able to chat to them and tell them all about the opportunities on offer to an Air Cadet.

The day was a success in that it presented another opportunity to remind the people of Southam, young and old, about their local Air Training Corps Squadron and that they are always looking for new recruits.

Both the incoming and outgoing Mayors of the Town visited the stand and promised to do all they could to advertise the Squadron and both the Lions and the Round Table also said that they would look towards giving the Unit greater prominence in their literature. Several local Councillors also stopped by for a chat with the staff and cadets.

Flight Lieutenant Moreton said after the event, "Just like last year, it was a cold, windy and mostly wet day but at least we achieved our objective of being seen and taking the opportunity of inviting the youngsters of the Town to come along and see us and see more of what the ATC has to offer. The addition of the radio equipment and the use of the Wing gazebo certainly produced more interest from everyone who visited our ‘stand.”
