24 Hour Sponsored Drill Marathon

During the weekend Saturday 23 rd September 2006 to Sunday 24 th September 2006 16 Cadets and two members of Staff from 2028 Southam Squadron took part in a sponsored 24 Hour Drill Marathon to raise money for the Squadron. This is the third time the Squadron has taken part in such an event. It has always proved to be an opportunity to both raise money and also develop team work whilst at the same time improving the Cadet’s Drill.

The Cadets arrived at 1100 hours on the Saturday and at 1200 hours they started the marathon with a full parade, with everyone taking part for the first hour. For the following 23 hours the Cadets and Staff took turns in performing various Drill manoeuvres for 1 hour at a time whilst the remainder stayed in the Squadron Building. During their ‘down-time’ the Cadets had the opportunity to relax by playing various computer games and listening to music. The more studious even did some revision for their forthcoming Leading and Senior Examinations and School Exams!

On the Saturday evening the Civilian Committee organised a B-B-Q for parents and friends to come along and support the Cadets and have an opportunity to see them in ‘action’ over a drink and some food. The Cadets also tucked into some well earned food as they changed over their Squads.

The marathon finished on the Sunday morning with everyone progressively changing into parade dress and for the final hour all Cadets and Staff joined together once again to complete the event with a full parade watched by many parents and friends who once again came along to watch the Cadets finish at mid-day.

The weather was generally kind for the 24 hours although there were few showers but everyone agreed that once again the event had been a great success. There were some tired feet and a few aching backs on the Sunday afternoon! The money raised will go towards the purchase of an ATC Ensign for the Squadron.

The Squadron Commander, Flight Lieutenant Moreton said afterwards, “It never fails to impress me when the Cadets are prepared to Drill for 24 hours, no matter what the weather or how bad their feet may feel, when they know that they are working as team to raise much needed funds for the Squadron. The stamina and enthusiasm, they showed even in the middle of the night is to their credit, once again demonstrating what the Air Training Corps is all about.”
