On Sunday 4th June 2006 several Cadets,Staff and members of the Civilian Committee visited the Imperial War Museum at Duxford in Cambridgeshire. The Museum is dedicated to Aircraft both Military and Civil, together with a World War Two Exhibition. There are many examples of Military Aircraft, including Spitfires, Hurricanes and a Lancaster Bomber, together with an American A10 ‘Tank Buster’ and a B52 Bomber. There is also a Concorde on display outside and many more aircraft inside various Hangers, far too many to mention here.
The day was dedicated to World War Two and there were flying displays by many aircraft but everyone agreed that the display given by a Spitfire was the best, reminding us all of the sacrifices made in WW2 but also what an impressive aircraft it still remains.
Three of the Cadets took on a challenge to pack a WW2 parachute carefully observed by an Ex RAF pilot. He couldn’t believe it when they completed the 'challenge.' He was even more impressed when they announced they were members of the Air Training Corps! He had been an Air Cadet himself.
It was also an example of how the Civilian Committee can be involved in helping to arrange these events, demonstrating their commitment to the Squadron and the Cadets.
The weather was excellent and everyone agreed the best way to get to know Aircraft is to visit a place like Duxford and see them up close, an excellent way to improve their Aircraft Recognition.
