Sunday 10th December 2006 may have been given severe weather warnings by the Met Office, yet six cadets from 2028 Southam Squadron were able to go flying in the Tutor aircraft at DCAE Cosford.
Luckily the poor weather predicted for the Sunday didn't come through until the afternoon, allowing all the cadets to have 20-25 minute Air Experience flights. Several cadets were even treated to some aerobatics and stalls by their RAF pilots. These flights gave the cadets the opportunity to put into practice a lot of the airmanship skills that they have studied over the last few weeks for their classification exams, and of course to have some fun.
For two cadets this was their first air experience flight and it was a particular accomplishment for Cadet Naomi Faria, who despite suffering from partial deafness was still able to take the controls and fly the aircraft.
Since joining the Squadron she has gained in confidence and is now the first to volunteer to ‘have a go’ and she recently took part in the Wing Cross Country.
The Squadron Commander, Flight Lieutenant Moreton said, ‘When Naomi Faria joined the Squadron she was naturally concerned that her partial hearing loss would affect her ability to do everything the Corps had to offer, particularly Flying and Shooting. I was determined that she would take part in anything and everything she wanted and today has shown that whatever their disabilities the Air Training Corps offers equal opportunities to all.” |
