Southam Squadron attend Official Re-Opening of Holy Well

On Saturday the 31 st March 2007 Flight Lieutenant Moreton and Cadet Flight Sergeant Milburn from 2028 (Southam) Squadron joined members of the Town Council, representatives of Vison4Southam and many other local organisations for the official 'opening' of the newly refurbished Holy Well at Southam. The Ceremony was held to mark the refurbishment and formal acknowledgment of greater Public access to this important Heritage Site.

The Cadets from 2028 Squadron have for several years been involved in maintaining the Holy Well and its surroundings. This involved the Cadets as part of their Community activity, keeping the grass and weeds from taking hold around the Holy Well and clearing any litter or debris that had accumulated. More recently in 2005 the Heritage Lottery Fund allocated some £102,500 to restore the Site and make it more accessible to the Public and with the help of local volunteers, the Holy Well, which is recognised as a significant Ancient Monument, can now be found easily by visitors to Southam. Several extra features have been added to the area surrounding and leading to the Holy Well such as fencing and a seat, all carefully designed to compliment the Site.

The photographs show the Cadets working on the Holy Well before it was refurbished and the Holy Well as it is now, together with the Official Opening.

Flight Lieutenant Moreton and FS Milburn then returned to a local Hotel with all those who had attended and took the opportunity to chat with the Town Mayor, Councillors from both the District and County Councils and members of the Vison4Southam Committee over cup of tea. Cadets from 2028 Squadron will continue to monitor the Holy Well on behalf of the Town Council and clear any litter or rubbish from the Site as they have done for the past six years or so.

Mrs Janet Cox from Vison4Southam said after the opening, "I am so pleased that the Cadets have maintained the Holy Well for the last few years and it is to their credit that they will continue to do so, now that it has been made more accessible to the public, with the potential increase in litter."

Flight Lieutenant Moreton said after the event, "The Holy Well is a major Heritage Site and a significant part of the History of Southam, so for the Cadets to play such an ongoing and important role in maintaining it, demonstrates our position in this Community and how highly the Town Council regard the Squadron and its Cadets."
