Cadets and Staff from all over Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing travelled up to RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland for Summer Camp on Saturday 14 th July 2007 . Annual camp gives cadets the opportunity to stay experience and live on an RAF Station for a week. It also brings together a lot of the Squadron training and provides additional activities not normally available back at home.
Corporal Chapman, Cadet Hicks, Cadet Jones and Plt Off Hicks from 2028 (Southam) Squadron attended the camp. RAF Lossiemouth is the largest and busiest fast jet base in the Royal Air Force. Tornado GR4's as well as search and rescue Sea King Helicopters are based there.
The week started with weapons training for those who needed a weapons handling test and a costal walk for those already qualified. Despite the poor weather at home the camp enjoyed sunshine on the first day.
All the cadets took part in shooting while on camp. Cpl Chapman gained his Wing Marksman award and was presented with his badge by the Camp Commandant , Sqn Ldr McCarrol. Cadet Hicks gained a Regional Marksman having which was great when you consider he had never fired the weapon before. Due to this he was also presented with the Camp marksman certificate.
During the week the cadets also visited various sections of the base including the fire station, No. 12 Squadron (Tornadoes), photographic and equipment sections. All of these visits were 'hands on' even allowing cadets to sit in the cockpit of a tornado.
Adventure training also took place as part of the camp. To help develop team building and confidence cadets took part on a high ropes course. This included a range of tasks from climbing as a team to building a crate tower. Towards the end of the camp, staff and cadets took part in a night exercise at RAF Kinloss a short drive away from Lossiemouth. This allowed cadets to build up their field craft knowledge and put it into practice. The exercise also included eating outside using the military 24 hour ration packs.
The week finished with a drill competition between the two flights and a night at the bowling alley.
All those attending the camp thoroughly enjoyed themselves and every one should be encouraged to attend next year, these are opportunities too good to miss. Talk it over with those who attended this year and speak to your Squadron Staff.
