On Saturday the 25 th September, 2010 19 Cadets and 3 members of staff from 2028 (Southam) Squadron held a ‘Open Day' at their Squadron Headquarters in Watton's Lane, Southam. The building was ‘themed' for the day to demonstrate the wide variety of activities and community involvement that the Air Cadets offers to young people. Each classroom and the main hall were laid out with both visual and electronic demonstrations, all prepared and arranged as in previous years, by the Cadets themselves.
Every possible opportunity to announce the day had been used by the Cadets and Staff including local advertising using posters made by the Cadets placed in the two Southam Supermarkets. This year the opportunity to place a display in the local Library was developed and the Cadets had also placed posters in their own Schools leading up to the open day.
An Air Training Corps corporate DVD showing the flying opportunities for Cadets was shown throughout the day, plus the opportunity to have a go on a Flight Simulator. The Cadets also took the opportunity to show their own successes, including the Sporting Medals won in Rugby , Athletics, Swimming, Hockey and Netball over the past 12 months. All of the Squadron table top computers and one of the lap tops were also pressed into use to show off the Squadron Web Site and a ‘Slide show' of the various social activities the Squadron has organised over recent years.
No one was really sure how the day would go but a number of family members and friends of the present Cadets came down during the day and a few potential' recruits visited. At least the Cadets families were able to get an ‘inside' view of the Squadron, bearing in mind most of them drop off and pick up the cadets each parade evening without actually entering the building!
The Squadron Commander, Flight Lieutenant Moreton remarked, ‘the whole idea from start to finish has been put together by the Cadets themselves. As with last year, they have organised the displays, produced the hand outs and set up the building, including erecting for the first time, one of our 12 person tents on the parade square! Even though the young people who actually visited the Squadron were a couple of years too young, the whole day proved for another year that both the Staff and Cadets are a team at 2028 and that in itself continues our success.”
