Every year Cadets and Staff from 2028 Squadron put a major effort into their annual collection for the British Legion Poppy Appeal and 2011 was no exception. Cadets and Staff followed on from last year and not only collected in Southam Town Centre but also Tesco Supermarket. The CO, Flight Lieutenant Moreton visited Tesco and spoke to the Community Champion once again who readily agreed the Cadets could collect both in the evenings and on Saturdays. Consequently the Cadets were in Southam Town Centre from 9am to 1.00pm on Saturday the 5th November and Saturday the 12th of November 2011. They also collected at Tesco each evening from Monday the 7th to Thursday the 10 th November 2011 between 6pm and 9pm. Two more Cadets collected in Tesco on Saturday the 5 th and 12 th November 2011 from 9am to 2pm. Tesco were extremely helpful and allowed Staff and Cadets to use their Staff Canteen for free drinks and a break from collecting. Those working in the Town Centre were looked after by a local Café.
This year even more of the Cadets volunteered to collect for the Appeal and once again both the people in Southam Town Centre and those shopping at Tesco were very generous; in fact many of them simply put money in the collecting tins without actually taking a poppy. The Cadets were overwhelmed by the number of people who put notes into the tins.
Flight Lieutenant Moreton commented at the end of the collection on Saturday the 12 th November, “Last year we decided to collect more for the Poppy Appeal and this year once again we determined to build on the totals we have collected in previous years. Tesco was extremely enthusiastic to help and immediately offered us free drinks and the use of their Canteen. This worthy cause and the enthusiasm of my Cadets to be involved continues to show the ATC in Southam in the best possible light.”
