RAF Careers Office visit 2028 (Southam) Squadron

On Thursday the 13 th May 2010 three RAF staff from the Careers Office in Coventry came to the Squadron. The ‘boss' gave an introduction and presentation on RAF Careers and then much to the amusement of the Cadets they were told to go out on to the parade square where the two Corporals had set up some leadership exercises. Having introduced themselves to the Cadets they immediately split the Cadets into teams and briefed them on a number of team-building problems and exercises. The added incentive was to do it in the fastest time. The cadets performed a number of tasks during the evening involving ropes and other sometimes odd items, all designed to make them think and work together to solve the problem.

There is no doubt that their approach amused the Cadets but more importantly involved all of the Cadets throughout the visit. The careers staff also took the opportunity to remind the Cadets that they were not at the Squadron to recruit people into the Royal Air Force but would be more than willing to spend a few minutes with them; in fact a number of the Cadets and their parents did take time to discuss future careers in the Royal Air Force and various ways of joining. Every one present agreed that the visit was a total success. Involving all of the Cadets all of the time was far more productive than someone standing in front of them and lecturing them on jobs in the RAF.

In fact we had a busy night with seven cadets taking their classification exam re-takes and the careers office here at the same time.

Flight Lieutenant Moreton said afterwards, "To have the office manager and the two Corporals here on the same night to present the Cadets with new and sometimes amusing methods of team building by involving all of them new and old was great. I was sat in my office and the enjoyment and hilarity was obvious for all to hear. The visit was a great success and it was nice to be complimented on the formalities we go through on our first and final parades by a regular officer."
