On Thursday the 29 th September 2011 two RAF staff from the Careers Office in Coventry came to the Squadron. Sergeant Seb Rowe and Corporal Vicci Rayner stayed all night and took the Cadets through various initiative exercises and team tasks, much to the amusement of the Cadets. They spent most of the evening on the parade square where the two Staff had set up the exercises. Having introduced themselves to the Cadets they immediately split the Cadets into teams and briefed them on what was to come. The cadets performed a number of tasks during the evening involving ropes and other items such as soft balls and blind folds, all designed to make them think and work together to solve the problem.
There is no doubt that their approach amused the Cadets but more importantly involved all of the Cadets throughout the visit. The careers staff also took the opportunity to remind the Cadets that they were not at the Squadron to recruit people into the Royal Air Force but would be more than willing to spend a few minutes with them. Sergeant Rowe and Corporal Rayner finished the evening in the main hall and shared their experiences since joining the Royal Air Force before taking questions on the RAF. After final parade a number of the Cadets took time to discuss future careers in the Royal Air Force and various ways of joining. Every one present agreed that the visit was a total success. Involving all of the Cadets all of the time was far more productive than someone standing in front of them and lecturing them on jobs in the RAF.
Before they left Sergeant Rowe and Corporal Rayner presented everyone with a water bottle and pen as a ‘thank you' for their efforts during the evening. Sergeant Rowe commented, “It has been a pleasure to work with these Cadets, this is the best Squadron we have visited to date, they really got into the challenges.”
Several of the Cadets commented that not only are these visits very enjoyable but all the Cadets look forward to them which proves that the approach is right and they provide a real opportunity for everyone to work together in an organised but fun atmosphere. In fact the ‘sound' of their enjoyment was clear to all with everyone very much involved.
Flight Lieutenant Moreton said afterwards, "The Careers Office Staff really get the Cadets involved with new and sometimes amusing methods of team building by involving all of them all the time. This is a visit that everyone looks forward to, I was sat in my office and the enjoyment and hilarity was very obvious for all to hear. The visit was a great success and it was nice to be complimented on the eagerness of my Cadets to not just have fun but give the tasks 100%." |
