Busy night of work and memories of ‘RED 4’

OC 2028 Squadron with Mrs Dawn Egging, the Mother of Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging ‘Red 4’ who died in August during a display by the Red Arrows. On Monday the 3rd October 2011 Cadets and Staff at 2028 Squadron welcomed Mrs Dawn Egging, the mother of ‘Red 4' Jon Egging who died during a display by the Red Arrows in August this year. Dawn had wanted to visit the Squadron to say ‘thank you' to the Cadets, Staff and Civilian Committee for their hard work and recognition of her son Jon who had only visited the Cadets in July. She is now a Trustee for the Jon Egging Trust set up in his name to give youngsters from under privileged backgrounds an opportunity to achieve through flying and teamwork. Mrs Egging spent time chatting with half of the Cadets and Staff and met members of the Civilian Committee. She also spoke with Squadron Leader Harrison and Squadron Leader Foster who were at the Squadron to assess Flight Sergeant Brown for his MOI Lecture.

Mrs Egging was given a tour of the building by Flt Lt Moreton and then spent time being briefed on the Squadron's intention to have a permanent memorial to her son placed outside by the parade square, together with an annual award to be presented to the Best Cadet at 2028 Squadron. She also met Mr and Mrs Scriven the Civilian Committee Chair and Secretary. Mrs Egging was very moved when she heard about the 12 Cadets who had done a sponsored 24 hour drill in her son's name to raise funds for the memorial.

After FS Brown had completed his Lecture, Mrs Egging was able to spend time with all the Cadets who had been so inspired by her son when he visited the Squadron and watch them on the parade square being inspected by the CO and practicing their drill. Dawn Egging was also presented with some flowers and handed the Book of Condolence signed by the Cadets, Staff and Civilian Committee. Mrs Egging informed everyone that all the Books of Condolence, including the one from 2028 would be placed in the RAF Museum at Hendon in memory of her son Jon, ‘Red 4.'

Before she left the Squadron Mrs Egging commented to Flight Lieutenant Moreton,”This evening has only reinforced my belief that setting up a Trust in Jon's name is the right thing to do. The Cadets are so impressive and a real inspiration to me, I have thoroughly enjoyed my visit and look forward to working with you all to maintain our links with the Red Arrows and all Jon stood for as an ex Cadet.”

Flight Lieutenant Moreton remarked after final parade, “Dawn Egging really wanted to visit the Squadron just to say ‘thank you' and spend a little time with the Cadets. She was clearly moved by the experience and touched by the efforts put in by them to remember her son, particularly the 24 Hour sponsored drill in his name. I am also pleased to hear that FS Brown passed his lecture and is now an Instructor Cadet. I would urge everyone to visit the Jon Egging Trust Web Site set up in Jon's name.”
