Southam cadets Lead Remembrance Day Parade

On Sunday the 8 th November 2009 33 Cadets and 8 members of Staff from 2028 Southam Squadron took part in the Annual Remembrance Day Parade in Southam. This year the Cadets were supported by a great number of their parents who also attended the Service.

The Parade which was under the command of the Squadron Commander, Flight Lieutenant Daryll Moreton and marched from the forming up point in Wood Street, along the Town Centre and into the Parish Church where the Service was to be held.

The Parade consisted of the British Legion, the Town Mayor, local councillors and representatives of all the local youth organisations led by the Air Training Corps. We were also joined this year by an Ex Cadet, Lance Corporal Steven Forrest who is now serving with the Royal Military Police.

All uniform members of Staff were present on parade, Flt Lt Moreton, Pilot Officer Preece, WO Storer-Rogers and Sgt Caine. CI Rogers, CI Halford, CI Wildman and CI Conran-Brown also joined the cadets for the church service.

A wreath was laid during the service on behalf of the ATC by Cadet Jonathan Rackam and prayers read by Cadet Gemma Davies.

After the service the Cadets from 2028 Squadron lined the path away from the Church together with the British Legion Standards and banners of all the organisations present.

With the increase in numbers the Squadron was able to parade in two Flights and provide two escorts to the Squadron Banner. Several Councilors and the Town Mayor made a point of commenting on the increase in strength of the Squadron and how well they represented the Air Training Corps.

Lance Corporal Forrest commented after the Parade and Service,” It fills me with pride to see such a huge amount of support for my friends and colleagues. I will return to London and inform my CoC of the fantastic support Southam shows; its times like these that make me proud to serve my Country and be a part of that small market Town, Southam. I want to thank all cadets, staff and civilians for their efforts today, I will remember this day when I'm out in Afghanistan ."

Flight Lieutenant Moreton said afterwards, "The parade is a vital part of the year for us; it is our way of demonstrating to the people of Southam that those who gave their lives both in two world wars and more recent conflicts will always be remembered for their sacrifice in the name of peace. We had tremendous support this year from the Cadets and their families. It is a privilege for me to lead the parade each year."
