Ride for Help for Heroes

On Sunday the 18 th July 2010 eight Cadets from 2028 Squadron took part in a cycle ride in aid of Help for Heroes. The annual event takes part around the Village of Napton-on-the Hill in Warwickshire and covers a distance of 18 miles along local roads and through a number of surrounding Villages. The ride has been taking place for over 30 years and it is the first time that the Air Cadets have taken part. The organisers had set up a refreshment tent on the Village Green and were keen to let everyone know that at various stages along the route there would be many more opportunities to pause and get a drink. There were over 350 riders at the start of the ride at 1130am.

The weather was for the most of the ride, warm and dry, although it remained cloudy throughout. The Cadets rode together along the route and had plenty of drinks and other necessary supplies such as a tyre repair kit and a pump in their day sacks! The atmosphere before the ride started was fantastic; there were Morris Dancers to entertain everyone and a great many people who had turned out simply to wave the riders off, a real community spirit. Once again several local people made comments about the Cadets taking time to be involved, as with Armed Forces Day. The route involved a figure of eight which ultimately resulted in everyone finding themselves back on the Village Green. There was no time limit, the idea being everyone enjoyed the ride and finished the course.

The Cadets finished together back at the Village Green just after 3.30pm with a few of them still having the energy to make a ‘race' to the finish, although at least one of them did complain of his legs hurting after he had ridden home to Southam as well!

Flight Lieutenant Moreton, CO of 2028 Squadron commented, “One of my Cadets suggested we should take part and when I heard this years charity was Help for Heroes, I naturally agreed. I am certain that the final total of sponsorship for this amazing cause will be excellent. My congratulations go not only to my Cadets but to the organisers of this great family event.”
