On Wednesday the 6 th June 2011 Flight Lieutenant Moreton, CO of 2028 Southam Squadron joined other local dignitaries, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Southam and School Governors at Southam College. They had all be invited to open the new Food Technology Room by the Headmaster Mr Samara and ‘sample’ afternoon tea made by the students at the College.
Many of the students at the College are also Cadets at 2028 Squadron so it was no surprise for Flt Lt Moreton to be greeted by Cpl Hazel Mann in the main School reception. On arrival in the Technology room Cadet Adam Thomas was on hand to offer a ‘drink’ and Flight Sergeant Callum Brown also made an appearance during the afternoon to greet the CO. Pairs of students from key stage three and ‘A’ level, including some from 2028 Squadron, had been asked to prepare a menu and afternoon tea to be judged by the guests as part of what the Headmaster called the ‘great Southam bake off.’
The standard of cooking was extremely high and very difficult to judge the best three as overall winners. The presentation skill demonstrated by the Students was in itself outstanding. After the winners had been announced and everyone had a chance to view the new facilities Mr Samra invited the guests and students to sample the various menus, not very difficult under the circumstances with such a high standard of sandwiches and cakes.

Flight Lieutenant Moreton commented on leaving, “I have made it one of my aims over the years to develop contacts with local Schools and Southam Community College is a prime example of this success, more than half of my Cadets come from the College. The Headmaster recently attended our 70 th Anniversary Awards and promised to do all he could to increase awareness of the Air Cadets in Southam. One thing is certain if the Cadets can cook like they did today, their D of E meals should be fantastic.”
