On Sunday the 18 th November 2007 the Civilian Committee of 2028 (Southam) Squadron were presented with the ‘Spitfire Trophy.' This Trophy is awarded annually to the best performing Civilian Committee in Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing. It is all the more significant for 2028 Squadron as their current Committee was only formed some 18 months ago.
Since taking on the role of supporting the Cadets the Committee have succeeded in raising no less than £9113.00 from the Lottery Fund, money which has already gone towards new computers, sports equipment and other items such as a digital camera and D of E equipment. There is still more equipment waiting to be installed into the Squadron which will greatly enhance the ability of the Staff to teach the Cadets
They have also acquired a free computer from Warwickshire County Council with a grant for mapping and flight simulator software, plus more recently £500 towards the production of a Squadron Pantomime which the Cadets and Staff will present in the Town in the New Year. There has been a grant towards transport provision from Southam Town Council and one from the Southam Lions.
On the social front the Committee has supported the Squadron during their annual 24 hour drill marathon by providing refreshments and helping with a ‘hog roast.' They also arrange transport for social events and provided refreshments during the Squadron Recruiting day in 2007.
Mr Chris Scriven , the Civilian Committee Chair remarked, “The Committee has willingly supported the Squadron and will continue to do all it can for the Cadets and Staff. It has been a challenging year for everyone with more to come in early 2008 but I hope that we have done all we can during year to help. We are very honoured to receive the Spitfire Trophy and will attempt to live up to it throughout the next 12 months. The Secretary and committee already have new ideas in the pipeline for 2008.”
Flight Lieutenant Moreton, the Squadron Commander at 2028 said, “The Committee has supported the Cadets during 2007 in a manner which anyone would be proud of, they have entered into the spirit of raising funds way beyond my expectations, the Lottery Grant being a perfect example. We have had a very difficult year and they have always been there for us, offering whatever help and support they can, they justly deserve this award for all the hard work and dedication they have given and continue to give to the Squadron.”
