On the 26 th October 2011 Air Cadets and Staff from 2028 (Southam) Squadron were able to view some of the Royal Air Force's latest aircraft during a visit to BAE Systems at Warton at the invitation of an ex-cadet who now works on the Eurofighter Typhoon programme.
The Cadets and staff visited the site as guests of ex-cadet Robert Foster , who arranged the trip through Drew Steel, the BAE Systems Military Liaison Executive. The visit included a tour around the Typhoon Final Assembly facility and Flight Test hangars at Warton for a close up look at the latest generation Typhoon and Hawk aircraft, both of which are currently entering service with the RAF, as well as a talk on the next generation of unmanned aircraft such as Herti, Taranis and Telemos.
Robert Foster said “Being a cadet at 2028 Squadron really helped me to develop as a person and nurtured my interest in aviation, so working on the Typhoon is a dream come true for me. I don't believe I would have had this opportunity without my experience as a cadet and the support of the staff at 2028 Squadron, and I'm very pleased to be able to say “Thank You” by giving them this opportunity to visit BAE Systems at Warton.
Drew Steel said “I was happy to arrange the visit by 2028 Squadron to Warton. It gives the cadets a rare opportunity to get up close to aircraft such as Typhoon and Hawk and also an insight into the important manufacturing and development work that is done by BAE Systems. Hopefully visits such as this one will inspire and encourage some of them to pursue careers in aviation, science or engineering.”
Flight Lieutenant Daryll Moreton, Commanding Officer of 2028 Squadron commented after the visit, “Bob Foster has been trying to arrange this visit for a while so I am delighted that we were finally able to visit Wharton. Both the Cadets and Staff thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to see how Typhoon and Hawk up close. My thanks also go to Drew Steel for arranging our visit.”
