On Saturday the 27 th January 2007 Cadets from 2028 Southam Squadron joined other representatives of the Town and its Youth Groups to take the first steps in helping to make a wooden Monument which will be situated in the Town Centre. The idea came from the organisers of Vison4Southam who together with the Town Council decided that a Monument should be constructed to not only reflect past history but also show the diverse number of organisations that are currently working in Southam. Each organisation or moment of History will be shown on the Monument by a 'carving' which will then be fixed on to the structure so creating a permanent remembrance of those associated with the Town past and present.
2028 Squadron will be shown by the Air Training Corps 'Falcon' and the letters A T C carved into the centre of a 'disc' of wood which will then be affixed to the monument, the idea coming from the ATC Badge. The pictures show the ATC carving being developed. The idea is that the carvings are distinctively modern but show clearly the Organisation they represent.
A local artist who is an expert at carving wooden sculptures was on hand to give advice and 'finish off' the ideas each group had for their part of the Monument.
The Squadron Commander Flight Lieutenant Daryll Moreton commented, "when I was approached by the representative of Vison4Southam for us to become involved, I naturally said 'yes' after all we have had an Air Training Corps Squadron in Southam since 1942 and this is a wonderful way of giving us a permanent and visual place in the Town's History. We already maintain the Holy Well a, local Heritage Site, on behalf of the Town Council but this project clearly demonstrates that we are regarded as a permanent part of our local community past and present."
A ceremony will take place later in the year when the Monument will officially be placed outside the Library in Southam Town Centre. |
