Elmden and Yardley squadron Opens new building

The Lord-Lieutenant Paul Sabapathy of the West Midlands and other important dignitaries officially opened our new building on 1st September 2008 , At the Air Training Corp unit 2030 SQN (Elmden and Yardley) based on a T.A. centre Barrows lane Sheldon. The Lord-Lieutenant Paul Sabapathy of the West Midlands  Inspected the cadets and spoke with them. He spoke to all the cadets and guests and said he was honoured to see the cadets giving a good image to the youth of today. He explained that the cadets of today are the future of tomorrow and how they should be proud of themselves for putting on their uniform and being proud responsible young adults, he wished all the cadets at 2030 SQN the very best in their future where ever it may lead.

After the formal inspection of the cadets, despite the wet weather he then officially opened The Robert Taylor Building. Sir Robert Taylor, who died aged 75, masterminded the transformation in the 1980s of the regional airport at Elmdon into Birmingham International Airport.

The Lord-Lieutenant Paul Sabapathy chats with Cdt FS H Wagstaff during the inspectionTaylor served in the RAF as a pilot before electing, in 1973, to take early retirement. He was appointed director at Birmingham Airport in 1976, when its future was uncertain. He was in charge of the successful transfer of the terminal from Elmdon to the rapidly expanding site of today. He was also 2030 SQN Squadron President and Ex cadet of 2030. The Lord-Lieutenant Paul Sabapathy said ' He was honoured to open the building and extremely happy and proud that his predecessors name will live on at 2030 squadron'.
 
After the opening of the building guests and cadets went inside to have the official opening of the Clive Wright Room which will be used for training new recruits joining the squadron. Clive Wright was step father to ex cadet now member of staff SGT (ATC) Mark kenny, he also served on the squadron committee. He gave up much of his free time to help the Squadron over 20 years, no job was to big for him. Mrs Ann Wright Clives widow officially opened the room she said 'Clive loved the squadron and she, her family and 2030 SQN would sadly miss him, but this room would keep his memory alive and the purpose of the room would honour exactly how special 2030 was to Clive'.

After the formalities quests looked round the squadron and chatted with cadets, and helped them selves to a small buffet, a glass of wine or Champagne to truly celebrate the opening of the building. The Commanding Officer Flt Lt Mark Allwood said the night went fantastic and he thanked staff and cadets for the evening and gave special thanks to the dignitaries on the evening.

The dignitaries for the evening was: The Lord-Lieutenant Paul Sabapathy, Founder of the Charity Troop aid Ray Warren, RBL Knowle Branch Chairman Neil McDougal, Mrs Ann Wright, Flt Lt Chris Mumford, Retired SQN Ldr Mike Stagg, ex WO Eric Clifford, R.A.F.A Sheldon Chairman and committee members of 2030 SQN.
