On Sunday 23 rd February 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron filled three Gliding allocations at 637 Volunteer Gliding Squadron (VGS) at RAF Little Rissington. For all three cadets attending it was their first time flying in a Vigilant Glider.
After the Cadets and visiting staff arrived they were immediately looked after by the Flight Staff Cadet team. The Cadets were briefed regarding the safety on the airfield and in the aircraft, how to wear and use the parachute and the weather conditions for their first flights.
Then the Cadets pilot for the day, Civilian Gliding Instructor (CGI) Dave Bird, briefed them on their sortie for the day. The first sortie Cadets undertake is Gliding Induction Course (GIC) One, which covers how to pitch the aircraft and the datum attitude. The cadets are then handed control and are allowed to practice what they have just been demonstrated to them.
After set of three GICs, which are designed to allow the cadet to practice what they have learnt in the classroom about control of the aircraft through the different control surfaces. The cadets hope to follow in the foot steps of a number of other Cadets on the Squadron and complete a Gliding Scholarship. Indeed one of the Flight Staff Cadets at Little Rissington is Cadet Warrant Officer James Parker, who has qualified as a Glider Pilot at 637 VGS, following exactly the same program.
All three Cadets thoroughly enjoyed their time at 637VGS. 2438 Squadron send their thanks to 637VGS for allowing them such a great experience and to CGI Dave Bird for making the three first flights so enjoyable and memorable.
