Two cadets from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron took to the skies this Easter by completing their Gliding Scholarships.
Cadet Sergeant Alex Mutton and Cadet Adam Chen both achieved silver success with the award of their Silver Gliding Wings, following the completion of the week long Gliding Scholarship Course at DCAE Cosford.
Commenting on his achievement, Cdt Sgt Mutton said “gliding was an amazing experience that I really enjoyed. The weather was perfect and I achieved my aim of completing a solo flight and earning my silver wings."
Officer Commanding 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron, Flight Lieutenant Nathan Adams said '”This is the first time at 2438 Squadron that two cadets have been able to complete their Gliding Scholarships at the same time. Also being able to pilot a Glider on your own before they are old enough to drive is a unique experience which the Air Training Corps offers completely free of charge”.
Air Cadets are grounded
Holidays makers are not the only ones suffering from the effects of the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano’s eruption in Iceland.
Disappointed first time aviators from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron were also feeling the effects as they were told their gliding schedule was cancelled on Saturday 17 April for safety reasons.
Since some European air space has been closed more than 6.8 million airline passengers have been affected by the volcanic eruption and now 7 air cadets from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) have also been affected.
Though the cadets were disappointed at the decision, they fully understand the reasons why.
Flight Lieutenant Nathan Adams Officer commanding 2438 squadron said ' This situation is unprecedented in not only the history of aviation in the UK but also for the Air Training Corps. However safety is our number one priority so it is entirely the right decision to make.'
Civilian Gliding instructor James Parker added “Flying through ash or in an atmosphere heavily contaminated with ash is extremely dangerous. So, is not currently safe to fly".
