Twelve cadets and two members of staff from 2438 Squadron were back at their pointing stations to help Coventry City Council with the Coventry half marathon on Sunday 25 October.
The annual event organised by Paul Claridge from Coventry City Council saw the Cadets along with over 200 other volunteers carrying out the duty of course assistants to ensure the 2500 competitors remained on the right route. As the runners ran past the squadron building it was a great opportunity for the cadets to help out.
The staff also opened up the squadron building for any runner who needed a rest as the building was just over 9 miles into the race.
The race was split into 6 zones and the cadets were helping in zone 5 which was the longest of all the zones on the 13 mile route. CI Tillman was connected to the zone managers and the other race coordinators who made their base at Coventry Transport Museum . She was connected to them via a radio headset given to her incase the cadets or any runners in the zone needed emergency help.
The cadets thoroughly enjoyed the race especially watching the likes of superman and Elvis run past them. They clapped and cheered the runners giving encouragement as well as pointing them in the right direction. The encouragement given to the runners by the Cadets was much needed especially as they had over 4 miles left to run.
Civilian Instructor Roni Tillman said ‘The cadets thoroughly enjoyed the morning helping the council with the race, the encouragement they gave the runners was welcomed and it was a great opportunity to raise the profile of the squadron by supporting Coventry Council with this great event. |
