A record number of Cadets from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron turned up to show their respects during Coventry 's 2009 Remembrance Service.
Cadets from 8F (1st city of Coventry), 84 (Coventry Airport), 163 (Coventry Phoenix), 2286 (Arden) and 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadrons joined veterans from the Royal British Legion, ex-service organisations, serving personnel, the Army Cadet Force, Coventry Corp of Drums and other youth groups to march along Spencer Avenue with the Coventry Corps of Drums leading the procession through to the Cenotaph in the War Memorial park for the Remembrance Service.
Over the past few years 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron has struggled with cadet numbers. The Squadron staff have seen the attendance on parade nights and at other events fluctuate and the most cadets they have had turn up for Coventry's remembrance parade is fifteen, that was until this year's parade.
The Remembrance Service took place on Sunday 8 th November and was conducted by The Right Reverend Dr. Christopher Cocksworth Lord Bishop of Coventry . During the service the crowd stood in silence as the standards were dipped in salute as the bugler sounded the Last Post.
Hymns were sung by Mrs. Eileen Wakelin and prayers led by Reverend Father G. Byrne. The Exhortation was recited by ex serviceman Mr. Sid Watson and members of the Sea Cadet Corps, Army Cadet Corps and A cadet from 8F Squadron ATC.
Flt Lt Nathan Adams laid a wreath on behalf of 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron and Cadet Flight Sergeant Brandon Wood marched with the Squadron banner.
Flight Lieutenant Nathan Adams, Officer Commanding 2438 Squadron said : “ It was very pleasing to see so many cadets from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron on the remembrance Sunday Parade. Having struggled with cadet numbers of the past few years I am very impressed with the magnificent turn out. It is important for the cadets to recognise the sacrifices made in the name of freedom, both over the past conflicts as well as current operations.”
