Wing Blues come in Twos
Two Cadet Sergeants from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron have been awarded their ‘Wing Sporting Blue's and have been selected to represent Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing in the Senior Rugby Team.
Sgt Mutton and Sgt Ormbsy attended the Wing trials at Sutton Coldfield Rugby Club. As Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing had a very successful junior team the previous year, most of whom were now qualifying as seniors, the competition was definitely tough. After participating in a short training session, as a team, they were split into backs and forwards and started working on some more positional and tactical elements of the game.
As they would be playing Rugby Sevens for the Wing at Regional level, it was essential that they knew what their role was. After learning some of the key elements of Rugby Sevens they moved onto more advanced aspects such as calls and moves. At the end of the session the staff selected both the Sgts to be in a squad of 10 players which they would be bringing to the Inter Wing Competition at RAF Brampton.
Flight Lieutenant Nathan Adams, Officer Commanding 2438 Squadron said: ' This is the first time in recent memory that 2438 Squadron have gained a Wing Blue in Rugby , never mind two. This demonstrates both what is available to Cadets in terms of sporting events, as well as a personal achievement for the two Sergeants in getting to a level which enables them to play for the Wing.'
Regional Success - A Rugby first for Cadet Sergeant Ormsby.
After his successful trial and award of a Wing Blue for Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing, Cadet Sergeant Ormsby was requested to attend the Regional trials at RAF Brampton on Sunday 15 November. After various training exercises he took part in 3 30 minute training matches. Throughout the matches he was assigned to various positions within the side to test his ability as a rugby player. At the end of the three games he was told he had been selected to play for the Regional team.
Not only is Cadet Sergeant Ormsby ‘s success in being selected to play for Wing and Region a personal triumph, he is also the first cadet from 2438 (Bishop Ullathorne) Squadron to play rugby for Region. He will now go on to play other Region's in the Corps at Royal Air Force College Cranwell.
Sgt Ormsby said ' Overall my journey to the Regional rugby team was a very enjoyable experience however also extremely challenging both mentally and physically. It was by no means an easy task although I would strongly recommend anyone interested in the sport to take part'.
