Matlock D of E Expedition: 24-25 October 2009

Cadets from 198, 489, 1181 squadrons joined together with Cadets from 29F (Rugby) Squadron, and travelled to Matlock, Derbyshire for an adventure training weekend from the 24 th to the 25 th October 2009.

Arriving at the drop off point after a very early start on the Saturday morning, the cadets were met with a blanket of mist and very light rain. Still in high spirits the cadets set off along their routes. Some groups were undertaking their qualifying Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Expedition while others were having training. The start of their route was down a disused railway which made the navigation fairly straightforward, but once they left this track they had to travel across fields where their micro-navigational skills were heavily relied upon. After about an hour the mist lifted and was replaced by constant rain. Still the cadets soldiered on.

That night it did not take long for all to go to sleep after exerting so much energy throughout the day. The next morning was met with a sigh of relief as the rain had been replaced by pleasant sunshine.

Fg Off Short commented that the weekend was “an interesting, challenging weekend where most people exceeded their expectations.”
