From Navigating Theory
to Practically Navigating across the Countryside

On Sunday 24 th October 2010 cadets from 29F ( Rugby ) Squadron and 198 ( Hinckley ) Squadron travelled just outside Rugby to a village called Cotesbach where they left the minibus setting off on a circular route. The aim of the day was to put into practice all the theory lessons taught on the squadron about map reading and navigating.

This training included:

  • Orientating a map,
  • Using a compass to take bearings
  • Working out distance
  • Judging timing
  • How to use pacing to estimate distances
  • Hand railing
  • Attack points
  • Aiming off

All the cadets picked up the skills well and each of them led a small group on different legs of the journey.

Sgt (ATC) L. Ison said after the event: “it is a good to see cadets picking up the practical skills and seeing them with a sense of achievement when they realise they are navigating using nothing put a map, compass and their own brain.”
