A Mile of Pennies

Five cadets travelled to Yelvertoft village hall in order to take part in the laying of a mile's worth of pennies in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The pennies, which amounted to just over £2,000, had been collected in Yelvertoft and other villages in the area.

On arrival, the spaces for the pennies to be laid had already been sorted, and the cadets were assigned a spot in the top-left hand corner of the hall. Over the next few hours, the cadets tirelessly laid the pennies they had been given, becoming (in true cadet style) completely obsessive over how straight the lines of pennies could be. The residents of Yelvertoft also came out in force and the mile of pennies was laid within a few hours. The cadets all enjoyed themselves, despite a somewhat early turnout, and were happy to participate in the event.

Flight Lieutenant Gillian Short VR(T), 29F Squadron officer commented that ‘the squadron was very happy to be asked to help with such a worthy cause and also enjoyed the home made cakes and biscuits which had been made to help us.'
