Young achievers from 479 (Rubery) Air Cadets receive their Gold at St. James’s Palace4 members of 479 (Rubery) Air Cadets have achieved their Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award and received their certificates from the DofE Trustee HRH The Earl of Wessex.

They were Adult Sergeant Heather Rose, Cadet Flight Sergeant Richard Trezise, Cadet Sergeant Alex Moore, Cadet Corporal Joseph Wood and Cadet Spenser Lowes.

Each young person has achieved their Gold Award through a diverse range of activities for a period of at least 18 months. They worked tirelessly through five sections of their DofE programme – Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition and a Residential Section.

In 2007 the DofE celebrated its 50 th Anniversary and since 1956 the DofE has challenged over six million young people around the world to try new things, learn more about themselves and work together for their own benefit and that of their local communities. Young people will achieve a Duke of Edinburgh's Award if they show persistence, commitment and personal development over a period of time. Every activity must be successfully completed and assessed. The result is the world's leading achievement award for young people, recognised by employers and universities alike.

Flight Lieutenant P. McAuley, Commanding Officer of 479 Rubery Sqn added: ‘It is always a fantastic achievement for one cadet to gain their Gold D of E, but to gain four is an amazing achievement by the cadets and staff alike'.
