The Internet Explained on Wing Radio Course

Sunday 23 rd October saw a total of 18 cadets from across the Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing complete their Internet Module of the ATC Communicators Badge. The course, which was held at 485 (Harborne and Quinton) Sqn was facilitated by FS Richard Coates and CI Peter Coates

Cadets must complete all the relevant modules in order that they can be awarded their communicators badge. The internet module covers the following subjects:

  • Enabling Objectives
  • Simple Website Construction
  • Being proficient to send and receive Email & attachments
  • Showing how to use Search Engines to find specific resources
  • File Transfer Protocol
  • Showing how to use Web Browsers

The cadets were split into teams of two and each team had the use of a PC which was linked via a network to the internet. This course is not simply sitting in front of a PowerPoint presentation all day, it's very hands on and all the cadets were soon constructing their own websites.

Flt Lt Simon Jennings, OC 485 Sqn commented “Firstly, I would like to pass on my thanks, on behalf of the Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing, to FS Richard Coates and CI Peter Coates. I saw the preparation that goes into facilitating this course, both Richard and Peter spent the afternoon at the Sqn on the Saturday preceding the course, to get the pc network set up. I think that the cadets all turn up to this module thinking they know everything about the Internet, however, I think they soon realise that they have listen, and take notes!”
