A weekend of initial expedition training

A weekend of initial expedition trainingStaff and cadets from 487sqn ventured to Earlswood on Saturday 26 th July, for a weekend of initial expedition training. It was the first time the cadets had been on a walking exercise, and the first time for most staying in a tent. The Saturday morning began with some map reading instruction and the putting up of the tents.

As the morning drew on, it became increasingly apparent that it was going to be one HOT weekend, with the temperatures well into the mid 20's! As the last of the clouds cleared from the sky, it was time to set off. We walked a challenging route for first time cadets, allowing them to navigate and take charge of the group using the SMEAC briefing method, which the cadets took in their (sweaty!) stride.

As fate would have it, we discovered we were sharing the campsite with 84 sqn! We joined forces after dinner for a great evening of initiative exercises and team building, followed by some relaxing by the campfire.

By 8am the next morning, the sun had already begin to blaze once again! After eating breakfast and ensuring everybody was 'watered' in preparation for another walk, we set off into the sun, armed with plenty of sun cream. Not only did the cadets tackle some more intensive map reading, but they were also tested with some challenging emergency scenarios. After some fake broken ankles, missing cadets and missing staff, the cadets were well versed in emergency procedure.

We returned to the campsite after a tiring weekend in the sun, waved goodbye to 84 sqn and returned to the squadron for a de-brief.

The cadets did very well on their first weekend of expedition training and are now well prepared to begin their bronze Duke of Edinburgh training in the autumn
