30 Air Cadets from 492 ( Solihull ) Squadron, Air Training Corps have spent the weekend in the field. The weekend consisted of the cadets learning basic military field craft skills such as camouflage and concealment, patrolling, navigational and first aid.
Officer Commanding 492 Squadron Flt Lt Hemes explains, 'this event this year has been even more beneficial to the cadets because we have had a military advisor from the Royal Air Force. Service Instructor Simon Watson who's attached to 1368 squadron ATC provided some in-depth knowledge on current field craft skills and discipline to the cadets'.
The training that was carried out at Pike Pool, Nr Bromsgrove provided a sound environment for the final weekend objective; a night exercise. The night exercise consisted in an incursion on an enemy position that brought together all the leadership skills and field craft skills learnt throughout the weekend.
Cadet sergeant Dan McCarthy said 'with aspirations on joining the Royal Air Force the weekend allowed some insight into current military field craft and guidance from a serving member of the Armed Forces. The night exercise is the favourite amongst the cadets because it allows us to act independently from the staff and try and beat them as they act as the enemy'.
