| 2 Cadets from 495 (Sutton Coldfield) Squadron represented the Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing at the recent Central and East Region Junior Football Championships, held at RAF Cranwell.
Cadet Joe Copley and Cadet Luke Haywood were selected for the team after attending the Wing trials. Both received runners up medals for their efforts in 3 terrific matches. After a tight 2 - 2 draw with Trent Wing in their first match the signs looked good. Trent Wing then beat Herts and Bucks Wing 4 - 0 meaning Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing needed to beat Herts and Bucks Wing by 5 clear goals in order to make the final, the Wing raced to a 4 - 0 lead eventually scoring the important fifth goal with minutes to spare.
This set up a challenging final match with Norfolk and Suffolk Wing who were comfortable winners of their league, after a close start Norfolk and Suffolk were eventual winners with a 3 - 0 score line, leaving Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing as Runners Up.
Flt Lt Nick Upton, Officer Commanding 495 Sqn said "Having watched all the games I know that the standards were very high, I am very pleased for both of our cadets who came away with runners up medals" |
