"More Than a Brew For The Few"

On Sunday 14 th September 2008 495 (Sutton Coldfield) Sqn ATC held a Brew For The Few tea dance at Aldridge Community Centre. The tea dance approach to the RAFA's annual fundraiser was thought up by one of the squadron's cadets. Cadet Chris Hartland initially came up with the idea after doing some research into Bader Hall a building at his school named after and opened by Sir Douglas Bader. Chris and his father Richard had already done a lot of the organising and planning for the event before Chris transferred into 495 Sqn at the start of the summer.

On the day itself cadets from the squadron acted as stewards taking peoples orders for tea and sandwiches and then ensuring the right orders got to the right tables. The musical entertainment on the day was provided by The West Midlands Police Brass Band, The King Edward VI School Lichfield Jazz Band and a selection of tunes from 495 Squadrons Marching Band.

Whilst the 160 strong audience enjoyed the music in the main hall other visitors were taking in the detailed display boards placed in the community centre foyer. Chris also took the time to create an audio visual roll of honour displaying every pilots name who lost their life in the Battle of Britain and their was a display of flags from the nations involved.

Guest of honour for the day was, Councillor Tom Ansell, Mayor of Walsall .

The whole day was thoroughly enjoyable with a number of people dressing up for the dance in 1940's uniforms and outfits. Thanks to hard work of everyone involved a fantastic total of £600 was raised for the RAFA's Wings Appeal.
