The squadron were playing 479 (Rubery) Squadron; both squadrons had played against and beaten squadrons from across the area in a series of matches that had led them to the occasion.

This was the first time in fifteen years that the squadron had reached the final and they received a fantastic turnout of over 50 supporters joining them to cheer them on to victory.

Playing on a very blustery day, both teams knew that their work was going to be cut out for them.

An early goal from the opposition set 8F on the back foot and they remained so into the second half. After a steely half time talk the team came out more determined than ever.

The second half was eventful including a sending off and warnings from the referee the meant the opposition were a man down and this lifted the team.

With minutes to go and many missed chances a well worked goal was the reward for a game well fought. From there on 8F defended to ensure that extra time was theirs.

As the whistle for full time was blown spirits were high and the determination shone through the team and after an intake of liquids they we ready for the next part of the match and victory was in their sights.

The first half of extra time was filled with close calls for both teams and expectation and anticipation was in the air. The second half began with both sides know that if this ended in stalemate penalties would follow.

The winning goal was fired into the net with two minutes remaining of extra time the games fate was sealed, all 8F had to do now was hang on to a well fought and deserved victory.

The groan that met the signal for injury time could be heard across the pitch and gave the opposition a brief hope of an equalizer, however it was never in the offing.

The final whistle blew and the celebratory cheers and screams were deafening, after fifteen years the players celebrated being champions of the wing.

In true sportsmanship style the team from 8F ensured they acknowledged the players from the opposition before making their way to the presentation of the winners shield.

Wing Commander P P Ladwa presented the losing team with their runners-up medals, he then went on to present 8F's team captain; Flight Sergeant Craig Perkins – who scored both of the goals – with the winner's shield.

The team and their supporters went on to celebrate for the remainder of the day.

Warrant Officer Dean Gates, Squadron Sports Officer and Team Manager said ‘I am proud of each and every individual player that has enabled us to reach this victory. The dedication and persistence in training and on the field is a credit to them all. I would also like to thank the rest of our squadron, families and friends for their unswerving support'.
