It's a proud week for 8F (1 st City of Coventry ) Squadron as their nomination, newly promoted FS Rich Hulm, is elected as Coventry 's Lord Mayor's Cadet. This position is one of high honour involving a number of public appearances throughout the year where he will be the face of the Air Cadets in Coventry .
FS Hulm was chosen from amongst the nominations put forward by the five Coventry Air Cadet Squadrons because of his impressive contributions to both the ATC and the local community, as well as his academic and personal achievements. In addition to his cadet activities where he has reached Senior Cadet classification and achieved a silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award, he undertakes several volunteer activities such as assisting with a primary school's cookery club and helping with extra-curricular cricket coaching for the younger students at his secondary school.
Photography, however, is his main hobby, a passion which he combines successfully with cadets as he assists the Squadron's MCO in photographing events and utilises the subject matter available to him within the ATC for his photographic projects. In fact, FS Hulm's photography has reached a high enough quality to be included in a recent exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry and is something that he would like to pursue as a potential future career.
Commanding Officer of 8F, Flt Lt Amanda Hobbins, is immensely proud of her new FS, I am always proud of our cadets at 8F and this honour is a fantastic recognition of the character of FS Hulm. He is very community minded and as a result has received this unique and prestigious testament.
The FS himself is still somewhat stunned by the news. It was an honour to be told that I was being put forward as 8F's nomination for the Lord Mayor's cadet out of the 70 cadets in my Squadron. Finding out that I had been chosen to perform the role out of the five nominations is just brilliant. I'm chuffed and I'm looking forward to Armed Forces Day Parade and I hope I'll make 8F proud!
FS Hulm's first appearance as Lord Mayor's Cadet will take place on Saturday 26 th June 2010 at the Armed Forces' Day Parade, Coventry Cathedral at 11am .
