Wing Football Championship Semi-Final Reports

165 Squadron Aim for the Final

After a big win in the quarter final stages of the Wing Inter Squadron Football Competition against 493 Squadron on home turf at Castle Vale, 165 Squadron waited until the 14thhMarch to play their Semi-final match against121 Squadron on their ‘home ground' of Gamecock Barracks at Bramcote.

On a cold and windy day and at the early kick off time of 10 o'clock, the match began and a close fought game it was for a time. In a much more evenly sided game the visitors ended the first half with a lead of 4 nil.

The second half resumed after the usual half time ‘pep-talk' for both teams, and with the weather still holding dry but cold and windy, the two teams became even more closely matched with the score line increasing by one goal apiece to finish 5 – 1 to the visitors from 165 Squadron. This is the first goal that 165 Squadron have conceded in this year 11 a-side competition.

165 Squadron's football team are now looking forward to the Final against 29F (Rugby) Squadron at the end of the month.

Thanks must go to the OC 121 Squadron, Flt Lt Ian Crewe, for organising the match facilities and to Mr Colin Willis, a former member of the Civilian Committee at 165 Squadron for his refereeing skills.

End of the line for 121 in the Wing Soccer championships

121 (Nuneaton) Squadron team all set for the Semi-finals of the Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing Soccer championships

Nuneaton’s goalkeeper Liam Tuff pulls off a spectacular saveFollowing on from their previous Goals Galore performances against 492 Squadron when they won 7~1 and their 8 ~ 1 result against 479 Squadron the 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron lads were full of confidence when they took on 165 in the Semi-finals of the Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing Soccer championships.

So on the 14 th March keen to maintain their 100% winning streak the 121 lads started the game on fine form with both sides evenly matched. With some good play, 165 eventually got the better of 121 overpowering their defence and scoring the first goal. 165 kept the pressure on during the remainder of the first half with the play predominantly remaining in the 121 Sqn half. Despite a valiant effort from the 121 Sqn defence and some fine saves by their goalie 165 managed to score a further 3 goals during the fist half resulting in a 4 ~ 0 score at half time.

After a strong team talk by Flt Lt Crewe and CI Howes 121 were re calibrated and ready start the second half confident that they could turn things around.

The second half was most defiantly not a repeat of the first, 121 managed to hold off the relentless attack and pushed play into 165's half threatening their goal on numerous occasions. Thomas Goodyear from 121 eventually managed to score an excellent goal, apparently the first to be conceded by 165 in this years championships. Unfortunately 121 couldn't pull things back and 165 eventually scored another goal ending the match 5 ~ 1.

165 (Castle Bromwich) Squadron will now play 29F ( Rugby ) Squadron in the final in the Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing Soccer championships at DCAE Cosford on the 28 th March 2010 .

Flight Lieutenant Ian Crewe Officer commanding 121 ( Nuneaton ) Squadron said, “Our lads did their best to get to the final, they never gave up and kept the pressure on the opposition especially in the second half of the match. They should be proud of themselves, I can't remember the last time we managed to get to the Semi-finals so that was a notable achievement in itself.”
