On Sunday 26 November 2006 Air Cadets from across the Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing descended on Tudor Grange Park in Solihull all with aspirations of coming 1st in this years annual inter Squadron Cross Country Championships. The day started early in the wet muddy fields where Cadets turned out in a vast array braving the austere wintry nip in the air.
This year, 2006 saw 492 Solihull Squadron walk away with a impressive collection of trophies, which included Junior Boys, Junior Girls and Intermediate boys but with Flt Lt McAuley's, Rubery 479 Squadron hot on heels of Solihull's with the Senior boys trophy it was certainly a close battle to be top Squadron.
Cadet Flora Markham, ‘Female Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing Sports Cadet 2005/6 lived up to all expectations and came 1 st in the Senior Girls race bringing a gold medal home for Warwick & Leamington, 1368 Squadron.
Taking part in her first sporting event for 163 (Coventry-Phoenix) Squadron was Cadet Enya Tabram who entered the Junior Girls race. She made a very strong start to the race which would be decided over two laps of the course by quickly moving away from the remainder of the group. By the end of the first lap, Cadet Enya Tabram had extended her lead to one minute, twenty seconds and cheered on by the remainder of the Cadets from her Squadron she headed off on the start of her second and final lap. On crossing the finishing line, Cadet Enya Tabram had extended the gap to an impressive three minutes over the second place Cadet, to seal not only a Gold Medal, but also a place in The Wing's Cross Country Team.
The first 4 cadets from each race will be selected to represent the Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing at the Central & East Regional Cross Country Championships at RAF Cranwell which are taking place on Sunday 10 December 2006.
