Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing Field Day 2006

On Sunday 25 June 2006 more than 500 Cadets and Staff from 26 Air Cadet Units within the Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing converged on Gamecock Barracks Bramcote near Nuneaton for a day of impressive activity and competition.

The Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing annual Field Day and review, possibly the largest event of the year for the Wing, attended by hundreds of cadets and staff from all over the region, is a day of inter squadron competition and an opportunity for cadets to take part in a variety of training activities. It's also a fantastic opportunity for cadets and staff to get together with all their friends and colleagues from other squadrons and catch up with all the latest happenings on their units.

The day's competitive events included the band competition, drill, first aid, public relations, marksmanship, aircraft recognition, modelling and sports such as football and netball.

A full set of competition results can be found at the end of this report.

Following their success, many of the Squadron teams and those entering individual competitions who won their events during the Wing Field Day have subsequently been selected to represent the Wing at the Central and East Regional field day at Royal Air Force Wittering on Sunday 3rd September. Those selected to represent the Wing in the regional competitions this year have certainly got lots of hard work ahead of them if they are going to match the results of last years Warwickshire and Birmingham team who pulled off a spectacular victory by taking the trophy for the best overall wing performance at the Central and East regional field day. This was an especially significant achievement for the cadets and staff, the first time that Warwickshire and Birmingham had ever won the prestigious Fazackerley Tray trophy.

In addition to the competitive events cadets had the opportunity to qualify for their RAF swimming proficiency certificate, undergo radio communications training, try their hand at flying the Vigilant motorised glider simulator, visit the RAF careers display and even put their training to the test as they took part in various initiative exercises.

The Training Day ended with a parade during which the reviewing officer, Air Marshall Sir Roger Austin KCB AFC FRAeS RAF (Ret'd), presented awards to competition winners and adult staff. The highlight of the presentations for the Wing as a whole came as Air Marshall Sir Roger Austin, presented the Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing with a certificate in recognition of the fact that its cadets and staff had completed a staggering total of 75,000 hours of voluntary activities within their local communities whilst taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Millennium Volunteers programme. During his address Air Marshall Sir Roger Austin said “Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing is the first wing to receive the 75,000 hours certificate thus making it the top-performing Wing in the Air Training corps. The award of this certificate is a tremendous achievement for the Wing and demonstrates the commitment of both cadets and staff”. Air Marshall Sir Roger Austin also congratulated the wing on the high standards of training and turnout of those on parade.

The Wing DoE & MV Officer Squadron Leader Bryan Coats RAFVR(T) said " The award of the 75,000 hours certificate is indeed a tremendous achievement for this Wing, and reflects the good work done at all 27 of our units.  I am even more pleased that every unit has gained either the 100 or 200 hour awards, and we have a terrific number of cadets proudly displaying the MV 200 hr badge on their uniforms.  We are now working towards the magical 100,000 hour award".
