On Sunday 24 June 2007 more than 500 Cadets and Staff from 27 Air Cadet Units within the Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing
braved the appalling June weather conditions
and converged on Gamecock Barracks Bramcote near Nuneaton for a day of impressive activity and competition.
The Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing annual Field Day and review, possibly the largest event of the year for the Wing, attended by hundreds of cadets and staff from all over the region, is a day of inter squadron competition and an opportunity for cadets to take part in a variety of training activities. It's also a fantastic opportunity for cadets and staff to get together with all their friends and colleagues from other squadrons and catch up with all the latest happenings on their units.
The day's competitive events included the band competition, drill, first aid, public relations, marksmanship, aircraft recognition, modelling and sports such as football and netball.
A full set of competition results can be found at the end of this report.
Following their success, many of the Squadron teams and those entering individual competitions who won their events during the Wing Field Day have subsequently been selected to represent the Wing at the Central and East Regional field day at Royal Air Force Wittering on Sunday 2nd September. Those selected to represent the Wing in the regional competitions this year will certainly have lots of hard work ahead of them if they are going to bring home some regional trophies for the Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing team.
In addition to the competitive events cadets had the opportunity to qualify for their RAF swimming proficiency certificate, undergo radio communications training, try their hand at flying the Vigilant motorised glider simulator, visit the RAF careers display and even put their training to the test as they took part in various initiative exercises.
The Training Day ended with a parade during which the reviewing officer, Central and East Regional Commandant, Group Captain J A F Ford, FRAeS RAFR, presented awards to competition winners and adult staff. Group Captain Ford also congratulated the Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing for the high standards of training and turnout of those on parade.
The highlight of the presentations for the Wing as a whole came as Group Captain Ford, presented the Per Ardua Cup to the overall winners 2007 Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing Field Day 492 ( Solihull ) Squadron.
Officer Commanding Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing, Wing Commander Pravin Ladwa said, “I would like to extend my sincere thanks to ALL the staff and cadets who helped and participated during our Wing Field Day. I was so pleased to see that we had ALL 27 squadron's represented this year a 100% turn out, for the first time, at one of our Wing Field Days.”
“This year the standards of all competitions were very high and I would like to take this opportunity in congratulating ALL the winners and the losers. It was good to see that the trophies were shared across the wing. I know that Group Captain Ford our regional commandant was very impressed with the standard of all competitions and in particular the drill.”
“Once again my personal thanks to all of you for giving up your day (particularly considering the weather forecast. We had 505 cadet's plus 93 staff on parade. Well done.”
“Finally, I would like to wish all those winners who will represent the Wing at the Regional Field Day to be held at RAF Wittering on Sunday 2 Sept 07 good luck.”
