On Sunday 22 June 2008 more than 500 Cadets and Staff from 27 Air Cadet Units within the Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing converged on Gamecock Barracks Bramcote near Nuneaton for a day of impressive activity and competition.
The Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing annual Field Day and review, possibly the largest event of the year for the Wing, attended by hundreds of cadets and staff from all over the region, is a day of inter squadron competition and an opportunity for cadets to take part in a variety of training activities. It's also unique in so much as it's the only day of the year when a Blue Ensign is once again hoisted over the parade square of the former wartime base, RAF Bramcote, now the home of 30 Signal Regiment.
The day's competitive events included the band competition, drill, first aid, public relations, marksmanship, aircraft recognition, modelling and sports such as football and netball.
In addition to the competitive events cadets had the opportunity to qualify for their RAF swimming proficiency certificate, undergo radio communications training, try their hand at flying the Vigilant motorised glider simulator, visit the RAF careers display and even put their training to the test as they took part in various initiative exercises.
The Training Day ended with a parade during which the reviewing officer, Central and East Regional Commandant, Group Captain Brett Morrell RAFR, presented awards to competition winners and adult staff. During his address to the Wing, Group Captain Morrell congratulated the Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing for the high standards of training and turnout of those on parade. He also went on to highlight the importance of the Air Cadets within the community giving special emphasis to one of the organisations core objectives of encouraging good citizenship amongst its members.
The highlight of the presentations for the Wing as a whole came as Group Captain Brett Morrell , presented the Per Ardua Cup to the overall winners 2008 Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing Field Day 492 ( Solihull ) Squadron for the second year in succession.
Officer Commanding Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing, Wing Commander Pravin Ladwa said, “ I would like to express my sincere thanks to ALL staff and cadets who participated on our Wing Field Day and gave up their Sunday and attended this very important day. I was very proud to see that we had 100% turnout, 2nd year running, at our Wing Field Day."
"This year the standards of ALL competitions were very high and I would like to take this opportunity in congratulating ALL the winners and the losers. It was good to see the trophies were shared across the Wing. Group Captain Morrell, our new Regional Commandant Central & East Region, was very impressed with the standard of ALL competitors. Once again my personal thanks to ALL of you for giving up your day. We had over 550 Cadets plus 93 Staff on parade. Well done."
"Finally, I would like to wish ALL those winners who will represent the Wing at the Regional Field Day to be held at RAF Wittering on Sunday 7 th September 2008 . Good Luck."
