On Sunday 26 th June 2011 more than 650 Cadets and Staff from 27 Air Cadet Units within the Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing marked the 70 th Anniversary of the Air Cadets by converging on Gamecock Barracks Bramcote, near Nuneaton , for a day of impressive activity and competition.
The Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing Field Day and review, the largest event of the year for the Wing, attended by hundreds of cadets and staff from all over the region, was a day of inter squadron competition and an opportunity for cadets to take part in a variety of training activities. It was also unique in so much as it's the only day of the year when a Blue Ensign is once again hoisted over the parade square of the former wartime base, RAF Bramcote, now the home of 30 Signal Regiment.
The day's competitive events included, drill, first aid, public relations, photography, marksmanship, aircraft recognition, modelling and sports.
In addition to the competitive events cadets had the opportunity to undergo radio communications training, try their hand at flying the Vigilant motorised glider simulator and visit the RAF careers display.
The Training Day ended with a parade during which the reviewing officer, Central and East Regional Commandant, Group Captain Brett Morrell RAFR, presented awards to competition winners and adult staff.
During his address to the Wing, Group Captain Morrell congratulated the Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing for the high standards of training and turnout of those on parade. He also went on to highlight the importance of the fact that 2011 marks the 70 th Anniversary year of the Air Cadets and that the organisation had a bright future ahead of it with a plan to expand to a target of 50000 cadets by 2018.
He went on to say that, although the Air Training Corps is not a pre-service entry organisation we are proud of our links with the Royal Air Force and that the training young people receive during their time with the cadets is immensely useful in any walk of life.
In closing Group Captain Morrell said, “Thank you all for doing what you do so well and thank you for being you”
The highlight of the presentations for the Wing as a whole came as Group Captain Brett Morrell, presented the Per Ardua Cup to 487 (Kingstanding & Perry Barr ) Squadron, the overall winners of the 2011 Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing Field Day, who now hold the title for the second year in succession.
Officer Commanding Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing, Wing Commander Pravin Ladwa said, " I would like to express my sincere thanks to ALL staff and cadets who participated on our Wing Field Day and gave up their Sunday and attended this very important day. I was very proud to see that we had representation from all 27 units for the 3rd year running."
"This year the standards of ALL competitions were very high and I would like to take this opportunity in congratulating ALL the winners and the losers. It was good to see the trophies were shared across the Wing. Group Captain Morrell, was very impressed with the standard of ALL competitors. Once again my personal thanks to ALL of you for giving up your day. Well done."
"Finally, I would like to wish Good Luck to ALL those winners who will represent the Wing at the Regional Field Day at RAF Wittering on Sunday 4 th September 2011 ."
