Wing Staff Officers (WSO's) appointed by the Wing Commander have two quite distinct areas of responsibility they are:-

Squadron Wing Staff Officer - Each WSO is assigned to support a group of squadrons within the Wing. They are responsible for visiting and liaising with their units on a regular basis, acting as a conduit and relaying relevant information to the Wing Commander, Wing HQ or vice versa. They will also undertake the first class examinations, complete an annual inspection, and be available for general advice and assistance as required by the Squadron Commander. It should be noted that the day to day running of a unit is the Squadron Commander's responsibility. The Squadron Index shows which WSO is assigned to your local Squadron.

Functional Role - Each WSO is given the responsibility of coordinating all activities associated with a specific function such as Training, Health & Safety etc.

It is the responsibility of each WSO is to ensure they provide training for all cadets and staff on the Wing within their sphere of responsibility. They will oversee each area making sure that conformity exists and Corps regulations and policy are being adhered to. These roles have become even more important in recent years with changes in legislation, duty of care, risk assessing etc.

WSOs also sit on a Board that is responsible for appointing adult uniformed staff into the organisation.

Wing Staff Officers, like the Wing Commander and other uniformed Squadron staff are all volunteers and are members of the Royal air force Volunteer Reserve (Training Branch)
