Wing Sports Officer


Pat McCarroll is an ex cadet of No 494 (Smethwick) Squadron, which he joined in 1954 and reached the rank of Sergeant before being called up for National Service in the Royal Air Force.

After leaving the Royal Air Force in 1959, he became a Civilian Instructor with No 494 ( Smethwick ) Squadron.

In 1964 he went back into uniform as an Adult Warrant Officer and in 1967 was Commissioned and was appointed as Officer Commanding No 494 ( Smethwick ) Squadron in 1975.

He later moved to No 487 (Kingstanding & Perry Barr) Squadron as the Officer Commanding before moving on to Wing Staff in 1998 as Wing Sports Officer and appointed to the rank of Squadron Leader.

During his period of service, he has undertaken many annual camps all over the UK as well as attending camps in Germany, Cyprus and Gibraltar.

In addition to this he has also attended Gold Presentations for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme at both Buckingham Palace and St. James Palace as well as being invited to and attending The Royal Jubilee Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.

Pat McCarroll took early retirement from his job as a Principal Contracts Manager with the Leisure Services in Local Government in 1960 and has since then devoted much of his time to the ATC.

In addition to being Wing Sports Officer he also assists at Regional and National Sports Events. Furthermore he is also a qualified coach/official in a number of different sports.

To add to service career, Pat McCaroll was awarded the Cadet Forces Medal in 1976 and is due to receive the 4 th Clasp to this Medal in 2006. He has also been awarded The Queens Jubilee Medal and has also received The AOCs commendation.

Mission Statement
To encourage as many Squadrons and Cadets as possible to participate in sports activities within the ATC and to try and win the trophy as the best Sports Wing in the region.

Additionally to also try to achieve a top 10 position in The Corps for sports success.
